There is so much culture and history to be explored in New York City, and a great way to experience all of it is by visiting the the best museums that NYC has to offer. Because there are so many exhibits, it can be overwhelming to pick which one is best for you. Therefore, we have compiled a list of the best museums in NYC, so next time you’re in the Big Apple, you’ll have a better idea of which museum fits best with your interests!
The Metropolitan Museum of Art–
The Met (no it’s not the Mets Joey, any Friends fans out there?!) is one of the first museums that comes to many people’s minds when visiting the city, which is why we have included it on our list of the best museums in NYC. Whether you’re hanging out on the Met steps to live out your favorite Serena and Blair moments from Gossip Girl (for our younger readers), or just perusing the many exhibits filled with art and culture, there is something for everyone. There is a plethora of unique exhibits and art pieces from different historical periods all around the world. You can uncover mythological stories and figures in the Ancient Greek and Roman exhibits or explore all the mummies and mysteries in the Ancient Egyptian exhibits. If your passion is fashion, make sure to visit the fashion exhibit featuring a collection of extraordinary pieces. On a nice day, you’ll want to head up to the rooftop and bask in the sun. Overall, this is a great museum to explore culture and history.

The American Museum of Natural History–
This museum is informative while also keeping the interest of those with the shortest attention spans. The AMNH holds different pieces to spark everyone’s curiosity. So, if you consider yourself a fan of Night at the Museum, you already know the incredible amount of history contained within its walls. Displaying more than just the world around us, and what we can see, this museum makes the hidden wonders of the natural world accessible to all. Maybe the marvels of the ocean interest you, and you want to see a 94 ft long blue whale. Perhaps you have an affinity for astronomy and wish to explore the exhibit of stars and constellations. Even if you just want to get a look at the dinosaurs, which the AMNH is quite famous for, don’t worry they won’t come to life, it’s definitely worth the trip. After, be sure to head over to Central Park to relax and people watch. No matter what interests you—science, history, technology, etc,—this museum surely leaves you with a newfound passion. No doubt the AMNH qualifies as one of the best museums in NYC!

Museum of Modern Art–
The Museum of Modern Art, or more typically referred to as MoMA, is well known for its stunning modern and contemporary art pieces by world-renowned artists, qualifying it as one of the best museums in NYC. These pieces are priceless, and sure to keep all bystanders enthralled. Along with the artwork, make sure you check out the other hidden gems MoMA offers. Watch a film in the the cinema, take a stroll in the sculpture garden (including works from big-name artists like Picasso), and dine at the upscale restaurant and bar. The MoMA is the perfect location for a solo traveler in NYC. You will definitely want to contemplate the bizarre (in the best way possible) yet intriguing concepts of modern art uninhibited by the company. Therefore, if modern art is your forte, the pieces collected in this museum will not disappoint you.
The Whitney Museum of American Art –
Even through the outer architecture and design, this museum located at the High Line is sure to mesmerize you. It concentrates on more modern art, with primarily 20th and 21st century pieces. Along with the paintings, sculptures, and photographs, the Whitney showcases media art pieces, including films and videos. For those of us that enjoy interacting with art, the Whitney features forms of newer media, such as interactive and virtual exhibits. We like to think of this as the “higher tech” museum. Be prepared to spend hours wandering and interacting with the pieces. It is just so easy to get lost in here!

The Morgan Library and Museum–
The Morgan is the place to go if you want to find priceless and timeless artifacts or books. In the research library, also known as the Reading Room, you can book an appointment to explore rare and historic pieces of literature. The Reading Room is an amazing archival collection. It is one of the main reason why many consider it one of the best museums in NYC. Their archive contains Ancient Near Eastern tablets, Medieval and Renaissance manuscripts, printed books with ornate bindings, music manuscripts, modern drawings and also photographs. You can also peruse seasonal exhibits to see all the exclusive treasures the Morgan has to offer. Last year, they displayed a one-of-a-kind Bible with a bejeweled covering. But, there’s always a new and exciting exhibit to look forward to. If that’s not enough, they have an excellent dining and sitting area too.
